Acupuncture

i e Acupuncture is based on the Taoist belief that two life forces-known as Yin and Yang combine to produce a vital energy called Chi (Qi) , which flows through the body along 14 pathways known as meridians. When these life forces are out of balance, a person becomes ill. Needles inserted in acupuncture points along these invisible pathways stimulate neurological, immunological and endocrine responses and promote the release of endorphins and other healing chemicals in the body, pushing the unbalanced forces into equilibrium. In this way, the needles repair injures, treat some physical and mental illness and can also renew the body according to Chinese medicine.

Effectiveness of acupuncture

Acupuncture treatment is to build up the body's own inherent powers of self defense by stimulating certain points in the body, rather than bringing in outside forces to help fight the problem. By reestablishing the body's vitality, this treatment makes the patient fitter, stronger and more resistant to future problems.

Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles should not cause pain when they are inserted, however there is a “needle sensation”, which may be described as a tingling, or a feeling of numbness radiating from the needle. This sensation depends on the particular points chosen.If a patient is very sensitive to needles, the doctormay use massage orpressure on the acupuncture points without the use of needles.

Results of treatment

Normally for acute conditions, it takes between one and three treatments to see results, or sometimes, to cure the problem completely. For certain conditions, more treatments will be required to cure the condition.
