Herbology

 
 

In traditional Oriental Medicine, the term "herb" is generally used to refer to the hundreds of plant, animal and mineral products premedicinal herbsscribed preventively or therapeutically by the traditional practitioner. Plant herbs are the most frequently used substances from the traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia. But some animal products (e.g. oyster shell, earthworm, deer antler) and minerals (dragon bones, talc) are also used in herbal formulas.

Dr. Zhou is trained in the ancient methods of herbal medicine and can help offer an alternative to the normal western pharmaceutical prescriptions.

Chinese herbs are effective in that a herb has four primary healing properties:

    1. nature
    2. taste
    3. affinity with specific organs
    4. primary effect or action in the body

Generally, herbs dispel, astringe, purge or tonify imbalance of Qi, blood, fluids, phlegm and the external or internal climate-related imbalances of wind, heat, cold, dryness and dampness.

Qigong Qigong

"Qi (Chi) is a Chinese term used to refer to all types of energy. It is the intrinsic substance of the “vital force” behind all things in the universe. Gong refers to the power to produce an effect, an attainment of, or accomplishment that is achieved with steady practice. Loosely, Qigong can be translated as the study of Qi.

Qigong is the art and science of using breath, posture, movement, and/or sound to cleanse, refine accumulate and circulate Qi in the body. Through the cultivation and regulation, our resistance to disease, adaptability to the external environment, and immunity to pathogenic influences is strengthened. With a strong immune system, diseases are prevented, creating a state of super health, vitality and youthfulness for the practitioner.

The Practice of Qigong can help Prevent illness, improve one’s health, increase one’s quality of life, and ultimately leads to greater power for martial arts. Taking it one step further, Qigong training is also a way to attain greater wisdom and to realize the true nature of human existence and its relation with the cosmos."
